The conquistadorial interpretation of gameplay is an analytical framework in which a player’s primary actions (such as exploration, resource extraction, territorial expansion, and the defeat of major entities) are understood principally as acts of domination and control over a virtual world. Under this interpretation, progression is driven by the accumulation of success and the mastery of personal skill, rather than by immediate needs of survival or coexistence.
The liberationist interpretation of gameplay understands a player’s actions as primarily oriented toward emancipation, protection, or restoration. This includes defending vulnerable groups, eliminating hostile threats, or restoring balance within the game world. This interpretation frames progression as morally justified through the removal of obstacles that constrain the freedom, safety, or autonomy of oneself or other friendly entities.
